The current bishop of Rome and the leader of the Roman catholic church turned the internet a blaze after he suggested that the Catholic church could bless same sex marriages on a case by case basis.

Responding to a letter from 5 cardinals with formal questions  called ”dubia”  a Latin name for doubt , the cardinals wanted the pope to clarify on the sensitive issue of same sex unions, and  whether he intended to open the door to women who desired to be priests through ordination.

Responding to the letter, the pope reiterated  that the church only recognized marriage as a union between man and woman ,but opened the door for blessings of people in same sex unions

He explained that when the faithful ask for blessings they express a request for help from God to be able to live better adding that the clergy must adequately discern if there are forms of blessings, requested by people  which do not convey the wrong concept of marriage.

”“When you ask for a blessing, you are expressing a request for help from God, a prayer to be able to live better, a trust in a father who can help us live better,” the Pope wrote, adding that a clergy must show “pastoral prudence must adequately discern if there are forms of blessing, requested by one or various people, which do not convey a wrong concept of marriage.” the letter read in part.

The pope’s statement seemed to have been a contradiction to statements he made in March this year when he stated that the catholic church could not allow same sex unions as they could not ”bless sin”

On the issue of women’s  ordination, the pope upheld the worlds of the late pope John Paul 11 who stated in 1994 that the catholic church had no authority to ordain women. Francis  added that the issue needed to be studied in order to educate those who were still in doubt.
