The Government has issued a gazette notice revoking the proposed charges on identity cards, passports, and other citizen services.

The cabinet secretary Ministry of Interior Security Kithure Kindiki fulfilled his constitutional role by announcing to Kenyans that the new charges had been postponed to allow more public participation on the issue.

Kindiki took to his official social media platforms and posted up a gazette notice dated 14th November.

The notice in question revoked a prior gazette notice which had been issued on 7th November directing the State Department for immigration and Citizen Services to revise the charges levied on different public services.

”It is notified for information of the general public that Kenya Gazette Notice No. 15239 of 2023, 15240 of 2023, 15241 of 2023, and 15242 of 2023 in the Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette Vol. CXXV-No.239 dated November 7, 2023, published by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration relating to upward revision of charges, fees, and levies for various services provided by the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services has been revoked to allow more public participation on the matter. ” the gazette read in part

The current notice also included revised charges of citizen services which the cabinet secretary said were meant to take effect on January 1, 2024.

Kindiki also revealed that the State Department for immigration and Citizen Services had been directed to conduct and complete public participation before  10th December 2023.

The former politician further explained that the need for hiking citizen services was informed by the country’s goal of self-reliance in financing the national budget and to pay debt which poses grave threats to our sovereignty and the dignity of future generations.

On the particular issue of the acquisition of National Identity Cards by previously not registered citizens,  Kidiki stated that the Government would defray the costs of the revised charges, fees, and levies through a waiver for needy Kenyans who demonstrated their inability to pay.
