A 70 yearl old Ugandan woman has given birth to a set of twins making her  the oldest mum in Africa.

The lady identified as Safina Namukwaya delivered a baby boy and a baby girl as confirmed by the internatonal fertility centre in Kampala.

Namukwaya went through the In vitro fertilisation (IVF) but It is not known whether she used her own eggs — possibly frozen when she was younger — or those of a donor to conceive via IVF.

Speaking to members of the press before her delivery, the mother to be told her story on the pain and suffering of being a childless woman in the society.

“One day, a young boy said I had been cursed by my mother to die without a child,” Namukwaya said.

She revealed that her husband was not excited about the pregnancy as he thought that they were both old adding that the idea of having two newborns scared him.

“Men don’t like to be told that you are carrying more than one child,” she said. “Ever since I was admitted here, my man has never showed up,” she added, referring to the hospital complex.

Namukwaya also spoke on the challenges she faced carrying the twins stating that  weeks leading to her due date she had been “very sick” due to her double pregnancy and had spent nearly all her “savings” on healthcare.

Speaking on why children were imporatant to her, Namukwaya  explained that she longed for companionship when she got older addding that taking care of other people’s offsprings fueled her desire to one day take care of her own.

“I looked after other people’s children and saw them grow up and leave me alone,” she said, adding, “I wondered who would take care of me when I grow old.”
